Authorisation to practise in Luxembourg
Practise your healthcare profession in Luxembourg
Are you a doctor, nurse, care assistant or other healthcare professional who would like to settle in Luxembourg? Before you can practise, you need an authorisation to practise and, depending on your background, recognition of your diploma.
These steps can seem long and complex. We support you at every stage so that your project moves forward with peace of mind.
The steps before you can practise
- 1
Recognition of your diploma, if required.
Depending on your profession and the country where you trained, your diploma may need to be recognised before any application. Some European diplomas are exempt, for example general care nursing or midwifery diplomas. Depending on the level of the diploma, the application is made to the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Research and Higher Education.
- 2
The authorisation to practise.
It is mandatory for all healthcare professionals and is issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Security. It is what allows you to practise legally in Luxembourg.
- 3
Language requirements.
You must master the language needed to practise your profession: Luxembourgish, French or German. Depending on your background, a language certificate may be required.

Who is it for?
Doctors, nurses, care assistants, midwives, physiotherapists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals trained abroad, inside or outside the European Union.
What we don't do
We do not replace the authorities and cannot guarantee their decision. Our role is to prepare a complete file with you and help you avoid the mistakes that delay a procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Is my European diploma recognised automatically?
It depends on your profession. Some European diplomas, such as general care nursing or midwifery diplomas, are exempt from recognition. Others must be recognised before applying for the authorisation to practise. We check your situation from our first conversation.
Do I need to speak Luxembourgish?
Not necessarily. You must master the language needed to practise your profession: Luxembourgish, French or German.
Can I start working during the procedure?
No. Practising a healthcare profession without authorisation is prohibited in Luxembourg, even if your diploma has already been recognised.
My diploma was obtained outside the European Union. Is it possible?
Yes, but the conditions are stricter and each situation is assessed individually. Contact us to review your background.
Let's talk about your project
